On the border of Texas and Oklahoma lies a town called—you guessed it— Texhoma. Texhoma is home to 926 residents, a sharp decline from the 1,464 residents who inhabited the town sixty years ago. The town’s demographics have long been measured separately by both states. In 1990, the Oklahoma section of Texhoma had 746 residents, while the Texas section had 291. A law was passed in both the Oklahoma and Texas state legislatures that allowed a school district to cover the border of both states.

For most of the 1970s, kindergarten and middle school were handled by a Texas school board, while elementary school and high school were handed by an Oklahoma school board. Eventually, this was overturned, and Texas serves kindergarten through fourth grade, while Oklahoma serves fifth through twelfth grade. Students, whether they’re from Texhoma, Texas, or Texhoma, Oklahoma, can attend public colleges in each state with in-state tuition fees.
