Before Domino’s was the second-largest pizza restaurant chain in America, it was a small Michigan pizza shop in the 1960s. The chain was founded by two brothers, who also were the brains behind the iconic and ever-recognizable Domino’s logo. While the Domino’s logo features a domino for obvious reasons, the number of dots on the domino serves a purpose. When the logo was created, there were three original locations, so they opted to have one dot for each location.

The plan was to add another dot each time they opened a new location, but, due to the unforeseen success of the chain, it was deemed impossible. The original Domino’s logo was used until 1987, when it was flipped, and the blue and red colors made brighter to capture customers’ attention. Finally, in 2012, the current logo was created. This logo took the original domino picture and tilted it, separating the name of the chain from the picture. It also was the first logo to not have the word “pizza” in it. This was to emphasize that they offer a wide selection beyond just pizza. It’s a good thing Domino’s opted not to go with the original plan of adding a dot for each new location; they would have over 10,000 dots to fit in.
