“The Fartiste” might sound like the name of a character from a cartoon show, but it’s actually the name of an off-Broadway musical. The musical is based on a real man, Joseph Pujol, who exhibited such control of his body that he could fart on command and turn his gas into a stage act. Pujol lived during the late 19th century and, though he started off as a baker, he made a name for himself as a professional farter. Charlie Schulman, who wrote “The Fartiste,” says that he turned Pujol’s story into a show because everyone finds farts funny and he thinks audience members enjoy a good fart joke. One man, Steven Scott, produces all of the farting noises throughout the show with his mouth. In the show, the main character makes a living by putting on shows centered around his farts. Audience members have said that, beyond the obvious humor that comes along with a musical about farts, the show has a positive message about turning an abnormality into a strength. The musical is truly one-of-a-kind, with the main character breaking wind all over the theater, even in the aisles by the audience members.
