The humble sandwich is believed to have been born out of a request by the Earl of Sandwich and that in itself makes sense rather than something just being dedicated to him. Apparently the Earl was a heavy gambler, and when he was in the midst of a game he would do anything that he could in order to avoid leaving the table.
This ultimately led to him asking to have something to eat where he would only have to use one hand. According to reports he also specifically asked for his meal to be put between two slices of bread as that would make it easier to hold it all together.
Upon seeing this, and his ability to then continue the game, the other players effectively copied him. It was said that they would ask for something to eat ‘like sandwich’ and that is where we get the name.
