During the Civil War, both sides saw a massive problem: diarrhea. The Confederacy was lacking in food supply, while the Union had plenty of food —with the exception of the siege in Chattanooga— but saw the effects of nutritional deficiency. Throughout the US Civil War, there were twice as many deaths due to disease, such as malnutrition and dysentery, as there were deaths due to injuries on the battlefield. This was often due to spoiled foods or foods that were prepared improperly. One of the most unique codes of honor during the war? There came to be a mutual understanding amongst soldiers that you could not shoot at someone while they were in the midst of having a bowel movement.
