Everyone loves their dogs, but one community in Alabama has taken the adoration of these furry friends to the next level. In Cherokee, Alabama, you can find the world’s only pet cemetery dedicated solely to coon dogs. The cemetery was founded in 1937 by Key Underwood, who wanted to honor his beloved coon dog, Troop. The property is miles off the beaten path, and there are some lofty requirements in order to get your coon dog buried there.

The Coon Dog Cemetery’s website states that the owner must verify the coon dog was, in fact, an authentic coon dog, there must be a witness to verify this, and a member of the Key Underwood Coon Dog Memorial Grave Yard, Inc. must also be allowed the chance to see the coon dog and identify it as such. The graves at the cemetery vary greatly, just like what you would see in any ordinary cemetery. Some headstones are homemade, while others share information like the dog’s favorite activities. Walking through the cemetery, you can find a myriad of flowers, flags, and coins left at the graves.
