Research has shown that approximately 28.8 million pounds of antibiotics are sold every year in the United States for use in the agriculture sector, while 7 million pounds are sold for human use. That means that 80% of the world’s antibiotics are being purchased and used for animals. As antibiotic resistance rises on farms, use of antibiotics intended for humans has become more prevalent amongst animals. Most of these drugs are nearly identical amongst human antibiotics and animal antibiotics.
