When it comes to your funeral, most people realize that they will have family and friends there to mourn their passing and everything will be organized in such a way that it should all go off without a hitch. However, what happens if you have nobody or if you die in a strange place and nobody is there to claim your body?
Apart from it being a sad situation to find yourself in, there is some comfort if you just so happen to be in Amsterdam when that very thing happens. According to a range of sources, if you are indeed alone and die, then a poet based in the city will write something unique for you and then at the burial ceremony that is carried out by the city, the same poet will appear and read it out on your behalf.
At least that way they are making sure that people are getting a good send-off even when nobody even knew their name.
