The Elkmont Half Marathon takes place in Alabama each year in January. In 2016, the runners had a very special guest join them. Ludivine is a bloodhound who lived near the start of the half marathon route. When the owners let her outside to go to the bathroom, she joined the group of people and began the race alongside them. Ludivine’s owner didn’t know she was missing—or that she had joined the race—until a friend of hers called to tell her. Despite stopping to play in the water and follow some animals, the hound finished the race in seventh place. As the top-finishing female, Ludivine received a medal. The best part, in the eyes of the race director? The dog had never been on a run with her owner or gone on walks even remotely close to 13.1 miles in length, and she ran the entire thing without a leash or her owner.
