When you think of fruit, there is a pretty good chance that you can imagine the shape of a number of different varieties. Of course, you are also aware that fruit does indeed vary in size, but few people know that fruit can be reduced in size to something that is pretty much non-existent.

The smallest fruit in the world is the utricle, and you would be forgiven for never having heard of this before as it is hardly the kind of thing that you see on the shelves in your local grocery store. In fact, the utricle is something that almost nobody has heard of.

Think of a strawberry and the small seeds that are on the side. They are actually small fruits with the seeds, and even though they are referred to as an achene on a strawberry, a utricle is pretty much the same thing.

So, why do we say that it looks like an ant? Well, there’s no need to worry, as it doesn’t actually look like an ant, but rather it is the same size as one, so that gives you an indication of just how small this entire thing has turned out to be.
