The crocodile is a terrifying animal with its ability to kill and devour in an instant. The speed at which it can launch its attack is astonishing, but there is one small fact about this killing machine that somehow manages to partly diminish the terror surrounding it. So, what is that fact?

Well, unlike its close relative, the alligator, it seems that the crocodile does not have the best of relationships with its own tongue. In fact, it cannot stick it out and it is actually held in place on the roof of its mouth where it effectively sealed by a membrane. The main role for the tongue is to protect the airway of the crocodile as it does spend a vast amount of time under the water. Unlike us, and most other animals, the tongue has no role to play at all in the feeding of the crocodile so it has very little need to stick its tongue out anyway. After all, it’s hardly going to do so just to be cheeky to other crocodiles.
