In April 2017, Xavier Jugelé, a police officer in Paris, was killed in the line of duty. Jugelé had been working on the Champs Elysees for nearly three years when an attacker took his life. He was an active proponent for gay rights and was in a civil partnership with a man named Etienne Cardiles. To honor Jugelé, the first gay posthumous wedding in the country of France— and, presumably, the world—was performed for the couple. Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, and Francois Hollande, the former President of France, were in attendance. At the time, France was one of the few countries that legally allowed posthumous marriages.
