If you have never heard of sea silk before, then you are certainly not alone. In actual fact there is only one woman left in the world that knows how to make it and this does mean that it is highly prized around the world.

The woman in question is Chiara Vigo and she lives on the Italian island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean. She makes a cloth that appears throughout history and it was seen as being the finest fabric that was known to civilizations such as the Egyptians, Romans and the ancient Greeks.

The silk itself comes from a clam that is only found in the Mediterranean, and the silk is actually its saliva that turns into this rather strange and yet wonderful material. She then takes the raw form and creates amazing things with it with it, as it is a stunning fabric that goes far and beyond what you would ever expect to find anywhere else in the world. It literally is like silk and it does come from the sea hence the name. However, it will certainly be a major loss if nobody else seeks to take over from Chiara, for when she dies as this ancient art will be lost forever.
