In 2016, a 14-year-old girl in England made history when she was awarded the right to be cryogenically frozen. The girl, whose name was never released, was dying of cancer, and she wanted to have her body frozen in case scientists ever made new discoveries that would bring her back to life or cure her disease. Her father initially did not support her wishes until she got a lawyer involved. As the girl was too young to make a will, she requested that her mom, who supported her wishes to be cryogenically frozen, be given sole responsibility for making decisions on her behalf.

The girl wrote a letter to the court saying that she didn’t want to be buried underground, and that she wanted another chance at life. The judge ruled that, despite cryogenic technology not yet being proven as effective, the girl was in her right mind to make the decision. The facility that would house her body cost approximately $46,000, but she made it her final wish to be frozen. She died shortly thereafter, and her body was sent to a cryogenic storage facility.
