The Doors were icons in the 1960s and 1970s, but not everyone appreciated their music as it was. Jim Morrison, the lead singer, was known for being unpredictable, so Ed Sullivan made sure to meet with the band ahead of their performance on Ed Sullivan Show in September 1967. The show’s host had one simple request: change the lyrics of their song “Light My Fire” from “We couldn’t get much higher” to “We couldn’t get much better.” Morrison sang the lyric as it was originally written, much to the dismay of Ed Sullivan. Instead of inviting the group back for six more shows as producers had originally planned, he banned them from ever performing on the show in the future.
