It might shock some to know that even the British Royal Family took part in World War II, it might shock some even further to learn that Queen Elizabeth II, the current queen, was a mechanic in the war! She was always rather feisty and a very independent thinker it would appear, since not many women were mechanics in those days. She took herself off to the local employment offices at the young age of 16 and was keen to join the army.
This was against the wishes of her father, King George VI. It was noted by other fellow servicemen and women, that Elizabeth loved to get her hands dirty and slide under a car. There are various photographs of her in action during this time and she herself has said that it was one of the happiest times in her life.
