The concept of a Christian missionary heading to a remote tribe in order to convert them to Christianity is nothing new. What is unusual is when there is a twist in what is expected to happen.

In the 1970’s an American missionary by the name of Daniel Everett took it upon himself to head to Brazil, in order to try to make contact with one of the tribes in the Amazon that had not yet really interacted with the outside world. It was his intention to not only make contact with them, but to also go ahead and convert them to Christianity and away from what he expected to be their tribal religion.

However, it did not quite work out like that.

Instead, he discovered that the tribe were actually atheists. He initially thought that this would mean life would be so much easier for him, but that was not the case.

What then happened was the tribe he was visiting was able to convert him and turn him into an atheist. Apparently he felt that they were even happier and more at peace with their own selves than he had ever been. They were also far more sincere than any of the Christians that he had come across.
